Paranoid Scottish Defence League abandons Facebook due to fear of “fakes” PDF Print E-mail
By Steven Harkins, 7 March 2010

The Scottish Defence League’s failed demonstration in Edinburgh on 20 February sparked infighting between the groups’ leaders which led to them announcing they will no longer be using Facebook to organise demonstrations. SDL organiser Bobby Millar, a 46-year old support worker from St. Ninians near Stirling(1), announced:
“Whilst in Edinburgh yesterday [21 February] the lads from the SDL got chatting about this site (SDL Facebook group). Most of us all agreed that we close this site down and stick to the main SDL site the other thing I would like to suggest is that when someone new wants to join they have to be known by at least two members whom at least have attended demos this is not any disrespect to the people who have joined and like what we are doing but to them we must say its not fingers on the keyboards we need but feet on the streets”(2).

Millar, who was running the Facebook group, also denounced another of the group's administrators, saying, “It has also come to our attention that Karen Chesser is a fake we would advise you all to delete her from your friends and also pass the word round cheers”. Millar went on to say that “we even put her on as a group administrator for the females so she could chat about female views on [the] site”.

Karen Chesser, 40, from Aberdeen, had been an administrator on the site and was furious at being denounced as a “fake”. Chesser responded to the allegations by insisting she was a genuine SDL member and published her mobile phone number on her profile, insisting people call her so that she could prove her innocence. This prompted Millar to circulate her number to the other SDL group members(3). Chesser responded by saying, “When u get accused of something it’s nice to get chance to defend yourself. Hung jury, no say, no defence, you people are pathetic”. Referring to the calls the SDL made to her mobile phone, Chesser added, “Withheld calls of abuse very very mature”(4). The next day the SDL climbed down and allowed Chesser back in the group. Miller announced, “I would personally like to welcome Karen Chesser back to the group, also like to apologise for causing her any grief”(5).

Instead of using Facebook, the SDL are set to organise demonstrations on their own website. The group is currently running two websites. The only contact e-mail listed on one of the sites belongs to Bobby Millar, who is listed as the contact for Central Scotland(6). The second site is run by Scott Clinton(7)(8), a 30-year-old from Busby. This website has a Paypal account set up so that members can donate to the Scottish Defence League(9). The e-mail address on website with the Paypal account is registered to “Jock Casual”(8), who is listed as another one of the SDL Facebook administrators(10). Other administrators on the SDL Facebook site include Jeff Marsh and John Wilkinson(10); Marsh is a convicted football hooligan who uses the pseudonym“Joe Cardiff” on Facebook. The e-mail address of Joe Cardiff’s Facebook account is linked to Jeff Marsh’s Casuals United website (11). Marsh has published books about his days as a football hooligan with Cardiff City (12). On one of Joe Cardiff’s Facebook photos, he comments on a newspaper interview with Jeff Marsh, saying, “they butchered what I said fair play” (13) (14).

As the group announced its intention to quit using the Facebook group, Marsh/Cardiff vanished from the list of SDL administrators. John Wilkinson, 31, from Dumfries, a BNP member and activist, is another administrator of the Scottish Defence League Facebook group. Wilkinson is listed on the BNP leaked membership list and is photographed on Facebook leafleting for the BNP during the European Elections (15).

The Scottish Defence League claims that it is not racist or connected to the BNP and that it has been set up to peacefully protest against militant Islam. Bobby Millar, who decided to close the Facebook SDL group, is, however, a member of groups entitled “Stop calling me racist because I don’t like Islam”, “The government show Islam the door or we will end up in civil war”, “No more Immigrants, F*** off elsewhere England is full”, “BNP”, “BNP is the only way forward”, “we are all fed up with your DAMN ISLAM, leave us alone”, “Knight Nick Griffin”, “I Hate Police”, “For the BNP”, and “British and Proud, Stop Immigration”(16). He is also listed as a fan of the BNP’s Nick Griffin, Andrew Brons and Richard Barnbrook. In a statement on Scott Clinton’s SDL site, the group described Justice Minister Kenny MacAskill as a “traitor” and detailed the group’s plans to hold a “respectful vigil” in Lockerbie on 27 March(17). The Facebook page is still online although there were fresh calls to close it down on 27 February after members posted details of the group's page on the Spinprofiles site (18).
