Looking for the source of the newly released CIA-reports on the delayed capture of Eichmann, I made a small but interesting discovery, about a fact overlooked in the coverage of this news. It made me write this Letter to the Editor of the Guardian yesterday, and to NRC Handelsblad in the Netherlands. The Dutch letter was published in paper's Marie José Klaver's weblog on Internet affairs. Israel knew. The Americans may have done nothing in 1958 when the German intelligence service informed them that Eichmann was hiding in Argentina. The Israeli's did. When the first news about the CIA reports appeared on the Internet earlier this week, I googled for 'Eichmann' and 'two years' in search for the source of this news. What I found was the obituary for super-spy Isar Haral, who captured Eichmann in 1960 and abducted him to Israel. This 2003-article explains how Harel's team of 11 that included a woman, a doctor, a skilled forger and a specialist in make-up, followed Eichman for almost two years. The Australian paper claims it took that long to verify his identity. Thanks to the CIA documents now released we now know there were political reasons not to capture Eichmann any earlier. But the fact that Israel was nonetheless determined to not let him run, should have been part of your coverage. Specially since the Sydney Morning Herald named the Guardian as one of their three sources for this article.
